NY. Pays 210,000 per youth per year in an OCFS juvenile facility

Recently the NYT ran an article entitled  “New York Finds Extreme Crisis in Youth Prisons”  Here a Juvenile Justice watch group funded by the entity it is watching came out with a report that only got it 1/2 right.  The report addressed MH issues, keeping youths closer to their families and providing community services to non-violent youth.

The part that the report failed to even mention or address is the fact that NY is paying $210,000 per youth per year in a juvenile facility.  The NYT didn’t pick up on the number or the fraud, but out of the 138 comments, about 1/3 of the commentators were aghast at what it cost to house one youth for a year.  Most of the commentators stated that maybe the Department of Justice’s Report in August, 2009 and the current report from the Vera Institute should have investigated why it was costing so much per youth.
