“Our security and our staff did an excellent job of getting the situation under control,” said Principal Chris Douglas.
School officials say the brawls stemmed from a fight between two people at 9:18 a.m. during the pep rally for the school’s Bell Game with Apple Valley High.
When the pep rally concluded, three or four groups of students got into fights among a group of about 250 students who were heading back to class.
“There were a large number of students who were spectators, which made the situation look worse than it was,” Douglas said.
Nine security officers assigned to the campus, along with some teachers, separated the students, Douglas said. Officers fired pepper spray at some students to disperse them.
San Bernardino County sheriff’s deputies also came to the campus after receiving calls about the skirmishes.
“The worst that we had were a couple scrapes from people who bumped into each other while the altercations were going on around them,” said sheriff’s spokeswoman Karen Hunt.
Douglas said the pepper spray aggravated one student’s asthma condition and several others had to have their eyes rinsed out
