FL. 11-year old accused in stabbing to spend 3 weeks in Juvie

A judge has ordered an 11-year-old boy to serve three weeks in juvenile detention after Orange County deputies said he stabbed a 15-year-old student with scissors outside Chain of Lakes Middle School, near Windermere.

The suspect — whom we are not identifying because of his age, in accordance with our Crime Guidelines — appeared in court with his parents Thursday.
The 11-year-old could hardly see over the podium to talk to the judge, as his parents stood beside him, trying to apologize for their son.

But the boy’s father was stopped by his attorneys before he could finish.

His son is facing charges for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. The judge ruled the boy must spend the next 21 days in secure detention at the Orange County Juvenile Justice Center, until his next court appearance.

Investigators said the 11-year-old, a sixth-grader at Chain of Lakes Middle School, started fighting with an eighth-grader on the school bus over a cell phone.

When the bus arrived at school and the students got off, deputies said the 15-year-old hit the suspect in the head twice. That, according to investigators, was when the 11-year-old pulled a pair of scissors out of his pocket and stabbed the older boy in the chest.

The teen was taken to Arnold Palmer Children’s Hospital and is expected to recover. He does not face charges at this time, deputies said.

In court Thursday, the 11-year-old’s parents appeared extremely shaky. The family met the boy’s public defender after court.
