OH. Fights outside Max Hayes High School continue after false fire alarm

Students poured out of Max Hayes High School Tuesday after a the day’s second false fire alarm was pulled at the end of the school day.

Two fights broke out outside Max Hayes High School Tuesday after a pair of false fire alarms unleashed hundreds of students onto the street.

Cleveland police and Cleveland Metropolitan School District safety officials are investigating the two brawls, one on campus and one off campus, that happened near the end of the school day.

The first fire alarm was pulled in the morning and the second at 2:05 p.m., Cleveland Metropolitan School District spokeswoman Roseann Canfora said.

The second alarm sounded about 20 minutes before classes were scheduled for dismissal. Two students outside got into a fight in the parking lot, Canfora said.

School officials told the roughly 270 students they didn’t have to come back into the school after the drill. After that, a large crowd of dozens students made their way to the parking lot of Thomas Food Mart across the street, the store’s manager said.

The store’s surveillance camera captured the fight. The store manager said he closed the door and locked it out of fear. At least seven police cars eventually responded and officers broke up the crowd.

Police handcuffed several students during the scuffle.
