Illinois. Chicago police officer hurt in fight

More than a dozen students were arrested and a Chicago police officer was injured after fistfights broke out Thursday among students at Foreman High School on the Northwest Side, officials said.

Students interviewed at the school at 3235 N. Leclaire Ave. said the melee stemmed from an altercation between two male students and appeared to be racially motivated. The fighting began on the third floor and spread to a lunchroom on the first floor, they said. The school was on lockdown for a time, they said.

The trouble did not appear to be gang-related, according to Monique Bond, spokeswoman for Chicago Public Schools

The officer was hospitalized in fair-to-serious condition. A teacher was also hurt but declined medical treatment, police said.

Several students said they feared the melee would lead to more violence.
